You may have read the
title of this article and been surprised that this was even a question. After
all, the prevailing sentiment today is “It’s my life and my body and I can do
with it whatever I choose.” Judaism teaches us, however, that “a person's life
is not his own property, it belongs to G‑d.”1
Each person was given the gift of life and put in this world for a specific
purpose. Therefore, just as the prohibition of murder applies to others, it
applies to oneself, and the same goes for injuring others or oneself.

In the words of the
Code of Jewish Law:

A
person should also be careful regarding anything that might cause danger, for
we are stricter regarding danger than we are regarding Torah
prohibitions . . . Therefore, it is forbidden to go to a dangerous
place, such as alongside a dilapidated wall or to walk alone at
night . . . and it is forbidden to rely on miracles or to
endanger oneself in any such manner.2

So is it permissible
to participate in sports like football or wrestling, where there is a high risk
of injury?

Dangerous Jobs

Regarding the
obligation to pay wages in a timely manner, the Torah tells us, “You shall give him his wage on his day and not let the sun set over it,
for he is poor, and he risks his life for it . . .”3
Focusing on the words “and he risks his life for it,” the Talmud explains that
the verse is giving us a reason why you must pay on time, for this person
risked his life doing his job; for example, “he suspended himself from a tree
to gather olives or dates.”4

In a famous
responsum, Rabbi Yechezkel Landau, known as the Noda B’Yehuda (1713 -1793),
discusses the Jewish perspective on hunting:

I
have thus far discussed the matter from the perspective of proper conduct. Now
I wish to add that there might be an actual sin involved, too, since anyone who
occupies himself with this [e.g., hunts] must enter forests, exposing himself
to great danger from the many beasts lurking there. The Torah says, “And you
shall guard yourselves very well” . . . So how can a Jewish person
place himself where wild animals roam? Yet, even here, somebody who is poor and
needs to hunt for his livelihood is permitted by the Torah to do so, just as
merchants who travel the seas. Whatever a person needs to do for his livelihood
must be permitted, as the Torah says, “. . . and he risked his
life for it.” And our Sages say: Why did this man ascend a ladder, suspend
himself from the tree, and risk death itself? Wasn’t it for his wages? But
somebody whose intent is not for purposes of sustenance, but simply wants to
satisfy the whims of his heart by going where wild animals lurk, and thus
endangers himself, transgresses the verse: “And you shall guard yourselves very
well.”

From the above it is
clear that there are dangerous activities that may ordinarily be prohibited,
but for financial considerations one may be permitted to do them. This brings
us a step closer to our question about dangerous sports.

Contact Sports

Rabbi Moshe Feinstein
writes that he was asked whether it is permissible to play professional ball
despite the danger of getting hurt. Based on the Talmud we quoted earlier, he
writes:

It
is permitted to engage in a livelihood even if it involves a slight risk. Also,
it should be permitted when there is a remote danger of killing others, for
what is the difference between the prohibition against killing others and the
prohibition against killing oneself? Killing oneself is also prohibited as
murder, but it is permissible to take the risk for the sake of livelihood when
the chances are minimal. Seeing as such is the case, it is also permitted when
the minimal risk involved concerns injuring someone else. If this would not be
so, how would it be permitted for the owner of a tree to hire a worker to climb
it? Yet, this reasoning is only true if the other person takes the risk
willingly. Otherwise, it would not be permitted to put others in even the
slightest risk if they are unaware of it or if it is against their will.5

How Much Danger

It is thus clear that
one can play professional sports to earn a livelihood even when there is a
slight risk of bodily harm. But where do we draw the line?

In the responsum from
Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, it is not clear which type of “ball” playing he is referring
to. It can be argued that he was only talking about sports like baseball where
there is only a minimal chance of injury. Indeed, there are some who explain
that halachah permits activities
where there is only a very slight risk of danger.6
This would seem to preclude participating in more dangerous activities like
football or wrestling.

But there is another
factor as well.

Rabbi Shlomo Zalman
Auerbach writes that, in general, we look to the habits of the public to help
determine whether something is deemed too dangerous. He determined that
anything that the public “runs away from” out of fear of it being dangerous is,
in fact, considered dangerous according to halachah,
while anything that most people aren’t scared of is not.7

In other words, to
determine whether it would be permissible, one would need to determine what the
general public feels about it.

Since contact sports
are generally not something people avoid, one could argue that neither should halachah view them as dangerous.

Selling Yourself to Cannibals (or Enlisting)

Rabbi Meir Eisenstaedter (known as the Maharam Ash, 1780–1852)
notes that it is permitted for one to enlist in the army in times of peace. He
further points to a fascinating incident in the Talmud that seems to have implications
for our discussion.

Reish Lakish [who was known to be
extremely poor] once sold himself to a group of cannibals (others translate the
word as “gladiators”). He took a bag and a round stone inside of it with him.
He said: “There is a tradition that on the final day of a captive’s life,
before his captors kill him, they grant his any request, so that he would
forgive them for his death.” On the final day before they were set to kill him,
they said to him: “What would you like?” He said to them: “I want to tie you up
and have you sit, and I will strike each one of you one and a half times.” He
tied them up and had each one of them sit. When he struck each of them with one
strike with the stone in the bag, they died, because Reish Lakish was of great
strength. In order to prevent the others from realizing what was happening,
Reish Lakish gritted his teeth in anger after each time he struck one of his
captors: “Are you laughing at me? You still have half of a strike remaining
with me, as I struck you only once.” He thus killed them all and escaped.8

Does this mean it is permitted to endanger oneself for monetary
gain?

Reish Lakish was a very colorful personality, and before he
devoted his life to Torah study, he was actually a bandit. Indeed, it is explained in Tosafot that this story must have
taken place while Reish Lakish was still a bandit, before he returned to the
proper path of Torah, “because afterward he would not have disgraced himself so
much.”9

However,
the Maharam Ash points out that Tosafot’s only issue with assuming that this
story occurred later is the matter of proper decorum. There was no issue of it
possibly being prohibited due to his putting himself in danger. This implies
that his behavior was in fact permitted according to Jewish law.10

Accordingly,
some explain that as long as an activity is not considered more dangerous than
joining an army, it would be permitted.11
Thus, both professional wrestling and football would be permitted.

Final Note

Note
that not everything is clear-cut. On the one hand, we are still learning about
the degree of danger involved. On the other hand, new regulations and better
equipment make certain sports safer than they may have been in the past.

“A man's folly perverts his way, but his heart is wroth with the L‑rd,” says King Solomon in Proverbs.12 The Chassidic masters explain this to refer people who have what they need but are not satisfied. Wishing for riches, they seek out dangerous occupations and are “wroth with the L‑rd” when, heaven forbid, they get injured.13

Thus, before you sign your big contract with the NFL or try out another dangerous sport, it is best to consult with a competent Orthodox rabbi to ascertain whether this is indeed right for you.

I would add, that the idea that one should consult a competent orthodox rabbi before making the decision to sign a contract to say, play football, is a bit odd. The decisions as to whether a person as the talent and commitment to the sport is what determines whether one gets to sign a contract.
That there are decisions to be made as to health and safety, the 'orthodox' rabbi has no knowledge nor expertise in such matters. A person makes choices in life, and some are more dangerous and some less. Prudence, caution, and understanding of the risks versus benefits is always part of life's challenges. Playing football does have it's risks. Becoming a very competent player, maybe one well paid, and gratified for having made an accomplishment in this skill set is worthy enough work. That it might have a price is also to be considered, but not by the nanny state, nor the nanny religious who overstep the bounds of expertise and knowledge in making such decisions.

I'm probably stepping into a maelstrom with this reply, but...having "been there, done that" (as the idiom goes) for more than forty-five years, I believe a far more ubiquitous problem is that of competition per se. Tehillim 37:8 plainly states: "Do not compete, it brings but harm." The personal and related stories I could share would fill a book, and the history of Western civilization - so called - would supply a grim and graphic backdrop.

I note your point. However, most are not physicians, nor do they have any expertise in this matter nor in the matters outside of halacha. That some may in fact have some expertise does not grant the authority of the statement that one should seek the opinion of an orthodox rabbi in these matters. One should examine the issues and make an intelligent decision, and this doesn't mean that life's decisions don't indeed have grey areas for which benefits versus risks should be weighed. As the child said, with enthusiam, throwing the football: 'Go deep Grandpa"

If a doctor has an opinion it has some weight. If the doctor is a rabbi it has some weight. It is not the question. The question was about 'halacha' by an orthodox rabbi. I think there are decisions in life that don't include getting permission from an orthodox rabbi- as the benefits and consequences are not theirs to enjoy or suffer.

Tehillim 37:8 does not state "Do not compete, it brings but harm." It says something very different. Tehillim 37:1 begins with the three words that you excerpted from the complete thought: "Do not compete with the evildoers; do not envy those who commit injustice."

Tehillim 37.8 corresponds to the citation number and furthers the thought about competition, but is again clear that it is a warning about competition against evil. It is not an instruction against all competition per se: "Desist from anger and forsake wrath; do not compete only to do evil."

I believe that citations should be used in support of the author's intention, rather than to forward a personal agenda. The Tehillim in question here are intended to communicate a different message than "Competition is bad" and it is my opinion that your wholesale condemnation of what you choose to perceive and paint as the "grim and graphic backdrop" of western civilization is not warranted by the parameters of the essay.

Jon i love your comment. let me add that it is widely accepted that the very essence of Judaism is healthy competition among brethren, and so-called Protestant work ethic is based on Jewish foundations.
and esteemed MGoldberg, i don't know what percentage of rabbis have medical expertise but i trust quite a few. a rabbi who's also a close friend of mine and at the same time perhaps my biggest authority on Jewish issues,, and by the way a fan of sports including such seemingly 'unbecoming' ones as MMA, is a recent med school graduate and in waiting to start working as such. just yesterday i was consulting with him over some issues. also, great many Jews have and still are engaged in 'risky' sports, quite often not only without abandoning Jewish religion but as its standard bearers. my other friends such as Dmitri Salita and Yuri Foreman are prominent examples of that. i don't trust any rabbis they happened upon tried to talk them out of the activity they love

Thesis: each person's life is not his own property, it belongs to G d and is put in this world for a specific purpose.
Halachic considerations:
1) Rabbi Moshe Feinstein: one can play professional sports to earn a livelihood even when there is a slight risk of bodily harm. re: Reish Lakish, [this] must have taken place while [he] was still a bandit, before he returned to the proper path of Torah, because afterward he would not have disgraced himself so much.
2) Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach: to determine whether it would be permissible, one would need to determine what the general public feels about it. U.S. public opinion = backdrop of Western civilization. Westernization = Romanization arguable from Gamarah to Avodah Zarah, 2b.
Peshat tyche of Tehillim 37.8: Desist from anger and forsake wrath; do not compete only to do evil. Yes indeed. The need to engage torah and mitzvah are the province of jews and rabbis have their place teaching and discussing any number of issues. My own 'orthodox' rabbi has me comment to him on political events and attacks upon jews as that is my area of intense study. I would follow his advice on mult issue but medicine and the complex issues of sports, mma, et al are not his areas of expertise. We are all commanded to think, to reason, to pray but this is neither a totalitarian( like Islam), nor a false utopian faith ( like marxism and some other 'religions)we belong too, and as such, we are forced to make the best use of our decision making capacity and accept responsibilty for our acts and decisions. To balance the risks versus the benefits is a balancing act indeed. I think Boxers D Salita and Y Foreman, will have a good chance to develop as people because of their jewish practice and their skill obtained as fighters.

I see them do exactly so already. but if I may, and I realize this is not gonna be a very popular stand these days and here on this portal, still i'd like to play a little advocate for some of those religions you just contrasted against ours. in particular against Islam. I think its problem is precisely that it's not 'totalitarian' or at least centralized enough, quite opposite--they have such chaos and diversity of opinions, authority and structures, that next to it our own mess is like a 'vertical of power' ) precisely that enable some very ugly excesses in Islam; but hey, even our own community isn't fully without such unfortunate occurrences albeit on much smaller scale.
As for rabbi's opinions. I guess it really depends on rabbis. let's not forget we live in the 21st century where even most strongly protected religious environments aren't fully shielded from contact with surrounding world, and thus many rabbis, for example, have backgrounds in other disciplines.

Sorry I need to take two comments to express myself, I know I am not the most laconic person out there, but hopefully I''l be forgiven for it, since this is presumably a dispute in good spirit and with good aims. so: i was gonna say that many rabbis have quite some expertise in various fields; many even weren't originally religious or one way or another were in contact with 'secular' world and activities. The Rebbe went to Sorbonne, for instance, and from what I understand he could and often was consulted on medical and other scientific issues. and my friend and rabbi currently living down on Brighton beach, the one who is waiting to start work as an MD, is as good an authority to me on healthcare issues as anybody (as a matter of fact I spoke to him about some issues just a couple days ago). and he also happens to be a fan of mixed and other martial arts, mind you.

The question becomes one of responsibility for one's actions. A rabbi can be quite helpful and or give much needed information regarding halachi 'opinions'. But they can also be a true impediment to dealing with issues that really have nothing but 'opinions' as to yes, no, maybe and there is no definitive answer.
In sporting, you would find those who would believe it is mostly a waste of time and a life. There are others who would have cautionary stances well worth considering and those others who would leave it up to a 'responsible' person. The issue is this: one can't simply put it on a 'rabbi' to make all of life's decisions in that vast grey zone. Ignoring a rabbi's opinion when it is a clear halachic issue is one thing. It is quite another to suggest a rabbi has a clue about all those grey issues that really do take personal choice and responsibility to determine one's path in life. That is the important issue here. The need to take responsibility.

One indeed should rely on those who can offer well considered advice, and opinions. But ultimately, The decision for many truly grey zone issues as well as clear cut issues is it comes down to one taking responsiblity for one's actions. I had my rabbi stop by and out of a true desire to give me some good advice on a stock to buy, lead me to purchase 500 dollars of the stock. The next day, instead of it going through the roof and bringing me good return, it fell utterly flat, it's product was rejected and the price fell to zero, where it remains 5 yrs later. He saw me at shul, of course, and apologized very sincerely and I firmly told him he owed me no apologies at all, and it was a sincere belief that lead him to want to give me his advice. And I feel that way today- with one caveat- I don't look for advice on buying any stocks from him :^)

It was his father who is the expert. But your point about medicine again refers to what I assume are specifics regarding halachic law. Again.... we're speaking of sports and compettitions. All of which are rigorous. Just because a rabbi has some expertise in medicine why do you think that gives 'authority' about those grey zone decisions? And for what it's worth 99% of rabbis have no such expertise in medicine and regarding the grey zone issues they wouldn't have any more authority in such matters since it's a path one has to take responsibility for as with most everything else. The idea of rabbi's corralling and encouraging commitment to judaism, to halacha especially in this chaotic modern world is for the better- but, it is not the end to discussion and taking responsibility.

As to hunting. If one goes to bring home food, then it for purposes of feeding oneself and or family. If you say... 'he could buy it in a store', I'd add...'if you hunt, you take responsibility for the taking of the animal, and that is far more reasonable as to the actual eating, where one has too take responsibility for the act as opposed to merely purchasing it.

When it comes to watching pro-games, tv or at home, I think one should always ask a question to
themselves: If I had put myself in their shoes, would I do it? If you watch, but won't do it yourself, that is borderline hypocrisy. For instance, I don't like pro-football because we take the world's best atheletes and pay them money to mash each other together, permanently destroying their brains and body. Why not hand profootball players a shovel where the race goes to the one who can dig their grave the fastest. I won't say I'm not guilty. I have watched MMA, and boxing out of curiousity, only to work alongside an Ultimate Fighter who killed someone in the ring. To see these people pounding each other to submission is terrible. I cringe when they hit each other. One of the things I have learned about MMA is that you can't just tell who will win based upon looks. I must say though, I like baseball. I think it is safe enough.

Football players are heroic people

Rabbi Landau's responsum makes it clear that "Whatever a person needs to do for his livelihood must be permitted, as the Torah says, “. . . and he risked his life for it.” Updating this generalization to the specific of NFL football, we must keep in mind that when a young man decides to embrace the risks of playing this dangerous sport, he is paid a very large salary: a rookie earns a minimum of nearly half a million dollars per year. Most players are paid far more.

That salary is portioned out among agent, manager, attorney and assistants. Union fees are paid, so are doctors and trainers and nutritionists. Family and friends are often on payroll. The risk undertaken by one man is in support of a community that benefits from his bravery.

Further, taking the chance of getting into the NFL is often the only alternative to poverty.

Pro players support charities and contribute to society in many ways. Enjoy them for their skills, but appreciate them for their humanity and generosity.

Add a comment...I am not religious but always trying to learn more about the rules and practices of the religious and, in particular Jewish Law. I am perplexed how anyone who professes to be Orthodox and follow the commandments and law can smoke cigarettes which it is established does harm to body. This is an interesting discussion, but I think the more relevant question is, is it kosher to watch football? Some years ago I decided I could no longer watch football or boxing—two sports I loved—because I felt that I was essentially watching people commit slow-motion suicide for my entertainment. Yes, one might be permitted to earn money by a dangerous occupation, but is one permitted to enjoy the spectacle of another doing so? And this question is made even more acute by the fact that the spectacle of football is wholly contrived and unnecessary, unlike, say, the spectacle of a man going up in a tree to gather fruit (which is an activity proper to man and might involve the fulfillment of other mitzvot).

I see it as a balancing test, for any activity (from smoking, to engaging in amateur sports, to joining the Army to climbing a tree, to walking in a forest, from not losing weight if one is overweight, etc.) where one weighs the benefit of engaging in the activity with the risk of doing so, and that should be the Halacic criterion for determining whether the activity is permissible.

So, in my opinion, it would be impermissible for a Jew to be a window washer, because about 2% of those engaged in that line of work eventually are severely injured or lose their lives, and, in my opinion, that risk is great to take, even for the livelihood. That person would be better off doing something else. With respect to smoking, I see no benefit from that addiction, except to temporarily stop the withdrawal symptoms and make one feel good temporarily; the harm is self-evident. I therefore believe that every Jew has a Halachic obligation not to smoke, and if addicted (s)he has an obligation to quit.

I find it interesting that there is even a question whether or not a potentially dangerous sport is kosher or not.
After all, cigarette smoking which is
Life threatening isn’t against the Torah.
Doesn’t make sense to me.

i've only lived in the US for 26 of my 44 years, but all years i've lived here NFL has played on Sundays and also Thursdays. i also have several orthodox Jewish boxer friends. then there are cases such as Bill Goldberg, who did both NFL and wrestling; granted i don't know if he grew up orthodox but he is Jewish and never been shy about it, and he's not by far the only Jew in wrestling.
i also want to note this: Judaism seems to be too concerned with things being meritorious, so to say; that is i'm a bit annoyed by the line of reasoning that if something is done for livelihood then it's ok but if it's purely out of curiosity or entertainment, both for oneself or broader public, then somehow it's denounced. life is not all about straight rationality, you know

R' Yakubson, when you wrote with regard to R' Goldberg: "I don't know if he grew up orthodox but he is Jewish and never been shy about it." I really appreciate that sentiment. Whether a Yid is ultra-orthodox or purely secular, embracing his/her Jewishness is essential.
My experience with organized sports in the U.S. started in the '50s and extended into the '90s. The only thing that prevented me from playing pro football was a series of debilitating injuries which resulted in four stainless steel joints. I consider these injuries as Hashem's way of correcting my trajectory, and allowing me to appreciate His purpose for my life. It's not so much about merit as it is about pleasing Him Who gave and sustains life...all life. Good thoughts. Thank you for your reply.
